I've been wanting to get the Olympics journal entry out of the way for a while now, but I couldn't come up with anything. So, I have decided to write about my experience here at DA so far. I haven't been here at Deviant Art for very long and I'm learning stuff as I go along each and every time that I log onto DA.
I had no idea what I was getting myself into by immersing myself in DA! I was aware of 'some' games as they came across the TV screen, magazine page or a mention in social media. But I had no idea that most of the works that I would see here would mostly all come from games and gamers aka Fan Art! Personally; and don't squash me like a bug for this; the last game platform that I EVER got into was Nintendo! Those cartridges that you had to install and mentally keep track of which button does what for what you wanna do on the screen. I was getting my hand and eye coordination down pat. Lying on my back and playing Tetris for a thousand hours at a time...allowed me to advance into all the Mario Bros stuff.
And then they started changing things up and creating all new platforms and discontinuing past platforms. And then it was PlayStation and all sorts of other game platforms. I was so over forking out big bucks for everything that came out.
Enough was enough!
So. Here I am browsing through DA and liking all this art and wondering about references. The comments helped a little bit, but some of these pieces are crazy cookoo Fantastic. Who the heck are these created characters and why don't I know them. Finally I just couldn't take it anymore and started asking what the entire heck is going on around here???!!! So that is how I was schooled on what goes on here at DA.
I'm still feeling like this odd guy out, but I'm slowly coming to terms with that. I'll come across the most amazing creation of some man-thing all regal and warrior-like, with muscles bursting out all over the place, and shiny with gleaming sweat. But who the heck is this guy and why is he all grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr and stuff? If the artist mentions references I'm still like, what/who/when/where WHAT?!
My attention was drawn pretty quickly to TF2/SFM works. The fanart creations of those male characters really, Really caught my attention. I began to notice that artists were familiar and immersed in those games and graphic novels/comics and either going along with the story, or creating versions on their own with their own details mixed in and stuff. I'm still confused about guys actually are girls and girls are actually guys! Whaaaaaaaaaaaat?! Sniperstalker's works were the first to manipulate me into TF2 and SFM. Soldier and Spy and Medic are dreamy all on their own, but manipulated by artists here they are even Crazier! MarshmallowMedic is just one who comes to mind, as well as daFisher.
I tried getting into Anime a long while back, waaaaaaay before DA. Eh..... The stories were Great, but the character art was not doing it for me. So I was familiar with Sailor Moon and Pokemon and a few others. But here at DA, well geez! There's all that and so dang much more! I'm still not sucked into Anime, but I have stumbled upon a few works here and there that tap my imagination.
Growing up any comic that had Batman, Superman or Tarzan were the one's that I would buy and devour. So you artists here that take those stories and mythology of those stories and create what you create get a huge round of applause from me. I don't have to get out my encyclopedia to understand the story lines being represented here.
Now there is one artist here that has taken on my beloved and cherished characters from childhood stories and family movies and made them all his own. His takes on them will not allow you to sleep for weeks on end, and rend your heart out by taking what you have cherished all these years and stomped it all to hell and re-created them all fresh and new. That artist is Disse86. If you aren't aware of his works then I highly recommend you to visit his pages. But a Strong word of warning... It isn't for the faint of heart. Seriously..... Bwaaaahaaahaaaaahaaaa!!!
I have included a few here to give you an idea of his creative mind. But you have to browse his pages to enjoy more and more of this guys' crazy works.
Otherwise my experience here has, so far, been wonderful. I'm also learning the different means to which you artists create your wonderful works. I only had a small taste of digital artworks before I came here. Now I'm picking up if something is actually hand drawn or digitally created or even a mixture of both! Who'da thunk??!!
So a big hearted thank you to all of you who work so hard to create things that are in your head and need to come out before you go crazy! I love it and value your expression; even if I don't totally understand it. Ha!
